Highrise (Refracted Light)
Cast optical resin, pigment, mirror polished stainless steel
Strands of stacked transparent forms sway gently as reflected light bounces between, inside and around one another. Highrise (Refracted Light) draws upon origami folding forms that has been twisted and altered to create the illusion of movement; suggesting that the form itself is twisting and transforming in front of our eyes. The layers of luminescent resin imply the fluid futuristic forms of contemporary high-rises and skyscrapers while also referencing natural forms of arctic ice floes or shards of blown glass. The refracted light bounces between glass curtain walls, almost folding one unit into another, never knowing where one begins or ends.
Line of Sight (Glass Arcades)
Paint on drywall
This layered photo-collage uses the artistic gestures of folding, layering and cutting to transform architecture and space through optical illusions, false shadows and trompe l’oeil effects. Establishing a sense of place and drawing on archival photographs from the 1977 opening of the Eaton Centre, Line of Sight (Glass Arcades) celebrates the architectural expression of the original (and now forgotten) façade and the vaulted glass ceiling. The work playfully combines organic curved architecture that emphasizes the idea of meeting points or co-mingling lines with the celebrated glass canopies of modernist shopping arcades.
